Terminal 2 Car Hire Guide

Practical advice for passengers arriving at Manchester Airport Terminal 2. Find out how to collect your luggage and easily reach your rental car.

Arriving at Manchester Airport Terminal 2

Manchester Airport's Terminal 2 has recently undergone a significant expansion, making it a bright, modern hub for many international and long-haul flights. If you are landing here and plan to hire a vehicle, the process is straightforward, but it is helpful to know the layout in advance.

No Rental Desks Inside the Terminal

When you arrive at Terminal 2, you will find that the car hire desks are not located inside the terminal building itself. Instead, all companies operate from a central hub called the Car Rental Village.

Navigating from Baggage Reclaim

After you have cleared passport control and collected your bags from the carousel, you will pass through customs and enter the main public arrivals hall. From here, you need to follow the clear, yellow overhead signs directing you toward "Car Rental" or the "Transport Hub".

These signs will lead you toward the main exit doors of the terminal. The walk is generally quite short and the pathways are wide, making it easy to navigate even if you are pushing a trolley with heavy luggage or travelling with family.

Catching the Shuttle Bus

Because the rental vehicles are kept at a separate facility on Ringway Road, you must take a shuttle bus. Walking to the Car Rental Village from Terminal 2 is not an option due to the busy road network around the airport perimeter.

  • Where to wait: The bus stops are located just outside the main terminal doors. Look for the shelter clearly marked for the Car Rental shuttle.
  • Timings: The buses run frequently, usually every 10 minutes throughout the day, so you will rarely have to wait long.
  • The Journey: The drive to the village takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes depending on local traffic. The buses have low floors and dedicated racks, making it simple to load your bags.

Which Providers Can I Use?

Because every passenger uses the same shuttle bus to reach the Car Rental Village, arriving at Terminal 2 gives you access to the entire range of suppliers operating at the airport. You do not need to worry about certain companies only serving specific terminals.

Once you step off the bus, you will find desks for all the major brands in one building. This includes premium providers like Sixt and Avis, broad-fleet companies such as Hertz and Europcar, and excellent value options including Enterprise, Alamo, and Budget.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

The consolidated nature of the Car Rental Village means you have a wide variety of vehicle types to choose from. Whether you need a cheap economy car for a short business trip to the city centre, a spacious 7-seater for a family holiday, or a rugged SUV for driving into the Peak District, you can find it here. If you are visiting from overseas and prefer not to drive a manual transmission, there is also a solid supply of automatic vehicles available.

Returning to Terminal 2

At the end of your trip, you will drive your vehicle back to the Car Rental Village, not to the Terminal 2 drop-off zone. After you have handed the keys back to your provider and settled any paperwork, you simply walk out to the front of the village reception and board the shuttle bus back to the terminal. Make sure you allow around 45 to 60 minutes for this process so you have plenty of time to reach the check-in desks.
