Car Hire Return Guide

Step-by-step instructions for a smooth and stress-free vehicle drop-off at the Manchester Airport Car Rental Village.

Returning Your Rental Car at Manchester Airport

As your trip to the North West comes to a close, ensuring a smooth vehicle drop-off is key to avoiding unnecessary stress before your flight. Whether you are returning a compact economy car or a large 7-seater family vehicle, the process at Manchester Airport is well-organized, provided you follow a few simple steps.

Do Not Drive to the Terminals

The most common mistake travellers make is following the road signs for "Terminal Drop-off". None of the rental companies accept vehicles at the passenger terminals. You must return your car to the dedicated Car Rental Village.

Step 1: Planning Your Timing

It is important to leave enough time to complete the drop-off procedure. We recommend arriving at the Car Rental Village at least 45 to 60 minutes before you intend to be at your airline's check-in desk. This buffer allows time for the vehicle inspection, unloading your luggage, and taking the free transfer bus back to your departure terminal.

Step 2: Refuelling the Vehicle

Most rental agreements operate on a "Full-to-Full" fuel policy. This means you need to return the vehicle with a full tank of petrol or diesel to avoid premium refuelling surcharges from your provider.

Fortunately, there is a 24-hour petrol station conveniently located on Ringway Road, literally a few moments away from the entrance to the Car Rental Village. We suggest using this station for your final top-up right before you hand over the keys.

Step 3: Finding the Car Rental Village

As you approach Manchester Airport via the M56 motorway, look out for the specific road signs directing you toward the Car Rental Village. If you are using a GPS or smartphone navigation app, enter the postcode: M22 5WH.

Step 4: The Drop-off Process

Once you enter the village complex, you will see clearly marked lanes for each individual supplier. Simply follow the signs and drive your vehicle into the designated return lane for your provider, whether that is Enterprise, Hertz, Europcar, or Sixt.

A representative will meet you at the car. They will conduct a brief walk-around inspection to check for any new damage, note the mileage, and verify the fuel gauge. Once they sign off on the tablet, you will receive a closing receipt via email, and the security deposit hold on your payment card will be released.

Step 5: Catching the Shuttle Back

After your vehicle is checked in, take your luggage and walk the short distance to the front of the Car Rental Village reception building. Here, you can board the complimentary airport shuttle bus. Be sure to check the electronic display on the front of the bus to ensure it is heading to your required departure terminal (Terminal 1, 2, or 3). For more details on bus frequency, see our Shuttle Bus Guide.
