Using the Car Rental Village Shuttle Bus at Manchester Airport
Because Manchester Airport handles tens of millions of passengers a year, parking fleets of rental cars directly outside the arrival halls is simply not feasible. Instead, all major rental companies operate from the Car Rental Village, located a short distance away on Ringway Road.
To ensure passengers can reach their vehicles safely and efficiently, the airport provides a dedicated, complimentary shuttle bus service. Whether you booked a cheap economy car for a short city break, or you need to collect an SUV to explore the Peak District, this guide will help you locate the bus stop and get your journey started.
Walking is Not Permitted
Please note that the road network surrounding the airport is busy and not designed for pedestrians. It is neither safe nor practical to walk from the terminals to the Car Rental Village. The shuttle bus is the designated transfer method.
Where to Catch the Shuttle Bus
The airport authorities have clearly signposted the routes from the baggage reclaim areas to the shuttle bus stops. Simply look for the overhead yellow signs displaying "Car Rental" or "Transport Hub". Here is where you need to go depending on your arrival terminal:
- Terminal 1: Follow the signs to exit the arrivals hall on the ground level. The bus shelters are located on the main forecourt just outside the terminal building.
- Terminal 2: After collecting your luggage, head out of the main exit doors. The bus stop is situated very close to the exit, clearly marked for Car Rental transfers.
- Terminal 3: Follow the pedestrian walkway signs as you exit the building. The bus stop is located directly on the pavement outside.
Bus Frequency and Travel Times
The service is designed to minimize wait times for passengers. The buses run on a continuous loop between the terminals and the village.
You can typically expect a bus to arrive at your stop every 10 minutes. The journey itself is straightforward and usually takes between 5 and 10 minutes, although this can occasionally take slightly longer during peak morning or evening traffic around the airport perimeter.
Luggage Space and Accessibility
The transport coaches are built specifically with airport passengers in mind. They feature low-level floors to allow for easy boarding, which is particularly helpful if you are transporting family in a 7-seater and have pushchairs or mobility aids.
Inside, the buses are equipped with wide, multi-level luggage racks, allowing you to easily stow large, heavy suitcases during the short transit without blocking the aisles.
Arriving at the Village
The shuttle will drop you right outside the main reception building of the Car Rental Village. Inside this facility, you will find the customer service counters for all the major providers. This includes Hertz, Enterprise, Europcar, Sixt, and Avis, alongside value-focused brands like Alamo and Budget.
Once your paperwork is completed and you have the keys, your rental car—whether it is a standard hatchback or a brand new electric vehicle (EV)—will be waiting in the designated bays in the adjacent multi-storey car park.
Returning to the Airport
When your trip concludes, you will drive your vehicle directly back to the Car Rental Village (not to the terminal drop-off zones). After you hand the keys back to your provider, you simply walk back out to the main forecourt of the village to catch the return shuttle. Be sure to check the electronic display boards on the bus so you alight at the correct terminal for your departing flight.
