Navigating Manchester Airport (MAN)
Manchester Airport is the global gateway to the North of England. Handling millions of passengers each year across its three terminals, it is a bustling, expansive site. If you have booked a rental vehicle to continue your journey into Manchester city centre or across to the Peak District, understanding the layout of the airport will make your arrival significantly less stressful.
To help you prepare, we have compiled a collection of helpful, easy-to-follow guides above. These cover everything from stepping off the plane to pulling out onto the motorway in your economy car or spacious SUV.
The Terminal Layout
The airport operates three distinct passenger terminals. While they are connected by walkways (like the Skylink), they function independently for arrivals and departures.
- Terminal 1: The oldest and often busiest terminal, handling a mix of scheduled and charter flights.
- Terminal 2: Recently expanded and modernized, this terminal handles many of the long-haul and major international carriers.
- Terminal 3: Primarily used for domestic UK flights and short-haul European routes.
A quick heads-up about car hire desks
Unlike some smaller regional airports, none of the major car rental companies have desks inside the passenger terminals at Manchester. You will not be able to collect your keys or vehicle directly after clearing customs.
The Car Rental Village
To manage the high volume of rental vehicles, all major operators—including Enterprise, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Avis, Alamo, and Budget—have been consolidated into a single, purpose-built facility known as the Car Rental Village. This facility is located on Ringway Road, a short distance from the main airport complex.
Because of the busy road network surrounding the airport, it is not permitted to walk to the village. Instead, the airport provides a fleet of free shuttle buses. These buses depart every 10 minutes from clearly marked stops located just outside the exit doors of all three terminals.
Joining the Road Network
Once you have collected your vehicle from the village, you are in an excellent position to begin your journey. The Car Rental Village connects directly to the M56 motorway via a short slip road. From the M56, you have immediate access to the M60 (Manchester's ring road) and the M6, making it incredibly straightforward to drive towards Liverpool, Yorkshire, or further south toward Birmingham.
